I understand what it's like to feel trapped in horizontal development. It's not that I didn't think I wasn't trying. As a massage therapist, Bikram yoga teacher, and retreat-going-goal-setting success acheiver, I definitely thought I was making an effort. Yet, over time, I realized my journey had a distinctly horizontal flavor. I sensed there were soulful depths and soaring heights—whole other realms of being—that I had touched only in rare moments. All my development had been on the plane of trading in one habitual behavior for another "healthier" habit.
